A strong brand is much more than just a logo you recognize; it is the brand identity that is meaningful to your target audience. It is an identity that builds trust with your target audience. Burberry, a U.K.-based luxury apparel firm, has been successful in rebranding itself into one of the world’s top luxury firms using consistent marketing messages and strategic branding.
At its core, Burberry’s objective is to encourage people to express themselves creatively. At the same time, it seeks to honor its British heritage through craftsmanship and innovation. Its goal is to be the world’s most sustainable luxury fashion firm while they continue to develop quality items that will last forever (Burberry, 2024). Burberry’s brand identity represents these values through a clean, elegant visual identity and high-quality customer experiences.
There is no doubt that Burberry’s greatest asset is how well its name communicates luxury and heritage. The Burberry name has come to represent superior craftsmanship, classic style and exclusivity. In 2023, Burberry brought back its iconic Equestrian Knight logo. The logo allowed Burberry to establish a new connection to its past while still representing today’s modern look. Additionally, the logo further solidified Burberry’s identity as a luxurious firm with a strong British presence. Burberry’s motto “Burberry: London England” also establishes authenticity and heritage. However, since Burberry did not have the ideal positioning at all times, during the end of the 90’s and beginning of the 2000’s Burberry lost focus by allowing too many companies to license the Burberry name and by placing its checkered design on every conceivable item. This made what once represented an elite luxury feel commonplace. Burberry realized the mistake it had made and took action to restore the luxury feeling it once had. Burberry reduced licensing agreements, limited the availability of products, renovated its retail space, and began to emphasize its upper-tier fashion collections. All of these actions created exclusiveness for the brand and provided a stronger competitive edge within the luxury market.
Two strategies that exist when developing a brand name include developing a brand name based on the firm’s heritage or values. As an example, Burberry uses its founder’s surname; this provides authenticity to the firm and creates an identity that is timeless, personal, and relevant. Another approach includes developing a short and memorable brand name. “Burberry” is very easy to say, unique and identifiable globally. Therefore, it creates awareness for the brand and supports long term positioning.
In summary, Burberry exemplifies how successful branding involves consistently establishing a credible image with authentic relevance. Furthermore, Burberry demonstrates how evolution is essential when required. Through revisiting its historical roots yet adapting to evolving consumer requirements, Burberry was able to strengthen its image and regain its status as a leader among global luxury firms. Ultimately, Burberry demonstrates that successful branding is not simply identifying a good logo or saying; rather, it involves creating a lasting image that is both valued and trusted by consumers.
