Using Marketing Objectives to Guide a Marketing Strategy Marketing objectives assist organizations in developing a successful marketing plan by providing them with clarity on the end result desired from their marketing efforts. Organizations do not need to advertise products and hope for good outcomes; instead, organizations can define objectives that direct their decision-making regarding marketing. Examples of typical marketing objectives include increasing brand recognition, creating leads, generating sales, expanding into a new market, or enhancing customer loyalty.
A number of reasons exist for why organizations utilize marketing objectives. One key advantage is that marketing objectives allow organizations to easily assess whether a marketing effort was effective. An organization may want to generate sales; however, a better marketing objective would be to increase sales generated online by x percent during a particular timeframe. Therefore, there exists a quantifiable metric that marketers can evaluate. As reported by HubSpot, SMART goals are typically defined as specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound; therefore, utilizing SMART goals assists organizations in defining objectives that are reasonable and simple to follow (Chi, 2022).
Additionally, marketing objectives should align with the larger mission and goals of the organization. A company’s mission defines its larger purpose, whereas its business goals explain what the organization wishes to accomplish. In order to achieve the company’s mission and goals, marketing activities must be supportive of both. For instance, if an organization has determined that its primary business goal is to expand into a younger demographic, its marketing department could develop an objective of increasing awareness among consumers aged 18-30. The company could subsequently support this objective through various marketing strategies including social media advertising, influencer partnerships, search advertising, and/or content marketing.
Alignment with a company’s broader goals is crucial since marketing departments generally possess limited amounts of time and resources. Additionally, if a marketing campaign does not support the company’s broader goals, the funds expended on the campaign may yield minimal benefits. Marketing objectives enable marketers to select marketing activities based upon what the organization is attempting to accomplish versus merely following current trends in marketing.
Legal and ethical considerations should also be taken into account when establishing marketing objectives. It is not acceptable for a company to pursue increases in sales or customer base at the expense of deceiving consumers or violating consumer privacy. For instance, businesses must ensure that their advertising claims are accurate and supported by valid evidence. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) states that advertisements must be truthful and cannot be misleading or unfair; additionally, advertisers must present supporting evidence when applicable (Federal Trade Commission, n.d.).
While complying with laws related to ethics and advertising is necessary for responsible marketing practices, organizations must also consider the impact of their marketing decisions on their customers and the reputation of their brand. Although it may appear attractive to an organization to enhance click-through rates through misleading headlines or exaggerating claims about products, such actions could ultimately diminish customer trust. Long-term customer relationships should be encouraged through marketing objectives rather than solely pursuing short-term sales.
Ultimately, marketing objectives provide organizations with clarity and direction relative to their marketing activities and provide a method to assess the effectiveness of those activities. In addition to providing organizations with a clear path forward for measuring success, effective marketing objectives should support the company’s mission and greater organizational goals. Organizations must also take into consideration the legal obligations and ethical commitments of an organization when considering how objectives will be pursued. Ultimately, when all three aspects are aligned and utilized collectively, marketing objectives assist organizations in optimizing resource usage while building enhanced relationships with their customers.
